Family Fridays are held once a month at Oliver-Pyatt Centers beginning at 9:00am. The day begins with a Psychoeducational Meeting with Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, followed by a Nutritional Psychoeducational Group with Amanda Mellowspring, our Director of Nutrition Services. Here you will learn about Oliver-Pyatt Centers’ approach to eating disorders, our food philosophy, and will be given practical tools to help your loved one with their recovery process. Next, families will participate in a Multifamily Group led by Dr. Amy Boyers and Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt in which all patients and their family members discuss their shared experience.

After the morning sessions, an Oliver-Pyatt Centers Recovery Coach will host a Mindful Eating luncheon, where families will be taken through a typical meal like those their loved ones experience at OPC. After lunch, families will participate in an Individual Family Therapy session.

Keeping this schedule in mind, we suggest your travel plans include arriving in Miami by late afternoon or early evening Thursday, and staying until at least Friday evening.

All scheduled activities happen at Oliver-Pyatt Centers with the exception of possible outings a patient and her family may want to take on their own. The patient should request such outings by Wednesday, and be approved by their therapists and the team in advance.

For recommended outings, please visit our Local Resources page.

We recommend as many key members as possible attend these sessions in order to help the patient's recovery and the family’s healing. Siblings of high school age or older are welcome to join in the therapy groups. Participation in Family Fridays is considered an essential component of our treatment program; therefore it is critical that key members of the patient's family and support network make arrangements to attend if the team recommends it.

The closest airport to Oliver-Pyatt Centers is Miami International Airport (MIA). MIA houses major airlines, and is about a 20-30 minute drive from the Center.

Another option is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) in nearby Broward County. This airport is just over an hour's drive from the Center, but may offer more direct flights and/or better fares depending on where you live.

Both airports offer rental cars from most major rental companies, and we estimate a two-day rental to be about $200, including insurance, mileage, etc. The approximate taxi fare from MIA to OPC or any of the recommended hotels is about $50, including tip. From FLL, we recommend renting a car because of the distance; it will probably be cheaper than hiring a taxi. Oliver-Pyatt Centers staff will not be available for shuttle service because they are engaged with patient care.

Should you plan to take outings, with or without your loved one, we recommend you rent a car.

The following hotels are all within 2 miles of Oliver-Pyatt Centers. Although it is certainly safe to walk back and forth from the Center, we recommend driving because of the Miami heat. If you have not rented a car, cab fare from any of these hotels to OPC should cost you no more than $20 including tip.
